Chapter Thirty-Nine
Imogen huddled with Trummel, Ely, and Dyfan. Caleb burst through the liquid door and stumbled toward the others. The soldiers backed away and positioned themselves for battle. Caleb joined them. All three men stood with their guns aimed at the door.
A pair of hands clawed at the watery doorway, long fingers reaching through. The demonâs screeches and growls were muted. Sound didnât travel well from one realm to the next. The liquid door sparked with electricity. The fingers snapped back, disappearing. The rippling door began to solidify until it hardened back into slate.
âWhat happened to Bakari?â Imogen asked.
âHe stayed back to hold them off,â Caleb said.
âWill he reach the portal that takes him to his family?â she asked.
Caleb shook his head. âBakari let the demons devour him so we could get away.â
Grief gripped Imogenâs heart. Their mysterious guide had devoted his life to guiding humans through these caves. That heâd sacrificed himself to save their party made her feel sick. âWe should say some parting words for Bakari,â she suggested.
âWeâve no time to dally.â Trummel seemed to have no remorse for the loss of his porter. âDyfan, can you get a read on this place?â
âSorry, no.â
âTry, damn it!â Trummel yelled.
âIâm doing all I can.â Dyfan pressed his fingers to his head. âSomething in the caves blocks my ability.â
âThen use your cards.â
âThe cards are silent too.â
Trummel rounded on the blind man. âIf you canât lead us to the relics, what use are you? Youâre a liability, thatâs what. Old. Blind. Ely practically carried you through that last bit.â
âDonât talk to him that way!â Imogen snapped.
âIâll talk any way I please.â

Caleb hated Trummel in that moment. Caleb wandered a little away from the group, Bakariâs body still glowing with blue light in his mind. He mounted a flashbulb and fired it into the dark. Something glinted on the ground a dozen yards away. He hurried forward, training his headlamp on the cave floor.
âThereâs a path!â he shouted. He shone his headlamp over a muddy trail carved into the creek bank. Water trickled close by. âThe creek continues this side of the portal. I say we follow it.â While he waited for the others to reach him, he cast his light along the riverbank. By the time Imogen reached him, he had found the strange relic â a bare human footprint. The first theyâd seen since entering the caves.
